Disability – Know Your Rights

You probably have become so accustomed to having money withheld from your paycheck for so long that you do the math even before you receive it. In your mind that money is gone before you even get it. But much of that money still belongs to you and you are entitled to it, hence the term “entitlements”.

“The average American pays into Social Security well over $300,000 in their lifetime. That money in put into a system that is used to pay you back when you retire or when you become disabled.” said Mariaa, a disability attorney in Palm Bay, Florida. “If you become unable to work and earn a proper living, it is your right to start receiving payments from the Social Security Admin.”

History of Social Security Disability

The Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program started in 1956 when the Social Security Amendments of 1956 were signed into law in the United States. These amendments, signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on August 1, 1956, established monthly disability benefits for workers aged 50 to 64 who were unable to engage in substantial gainful activity due to a physical or mental impairment expected to last at least 12 months or result in death. The program was later expanded to include workers under 50 in 1960 and has since evolved to cover a broader range of beneficiaries.

Professional Opinion

Nobody who paid into the system should ever feel shy about applying to receive their benefits. Although there are gatekeepers whose job it is to verify claims as legitimate, it is your right to receive that money. The gatekeepers are there to simply keep fraudsters out.

Unfortunately, sometimes legitimate claims get caught up in the process too and consequently they are denied. Usually this occurs because the claim is lacking critical information which is needed to approve the claim.

A disability attorney can help you build your case from the ground up and improve your chances of getting approved on the first try, saving you precious time and getting the payments flowing.
